Ana Johnson was featured in the first episode of a new podcast created in collaboration with The Reflection Room.

Bianca Shen sits down with Dr. Ana Johnson, to explore a subject many students experience but rarely talk about: burnout and the loss of motivation. The conversation begins with an anonymous student reflection from someone who has worked for years toward becoming a physician but now feels numb, exhausted, and disconnected from the goals that once felt meaningful. Why does motivation sometimes fade even when we care deeply about what we are pursuing? And why can burnout appear even when nothing seems "wrong" on the surface?

Drawing on her experience supporting student mental health, Dr. Johnson shares thoughtful perspectives on why constant future-oriented thinking can lead to overwhelm and emotional exhaustion.

The episode also explores practical strategies students can use when motivation dips, including grounding techniques, merging work with personal interests, and rethinking how we approach rest. They also discuss how repeated setbacks and rejection can shape our sense of identity and self-worth, and why separating our value as individuals from external outcomes is essential for long-term well-being.
