Sensation Writing by Ana Johnson

Do you wish to try out Sensation Writing?

If so, start by writing down three low charged events that happened today, last week or over your lifetime (just in point form).

  1. -----

  2. -----

  3. -----

Then, assign a score from 0 to 10 to each of these (0 = completely indifferent to 10 = highly charged [really happy, excited or really sad, frustrated]).

Pick the least charged event.

Then free write on it, for a few minutes. Call this free write A.

Next, draw a circle.

At bottom left outside the circle, write "Place". At bottom right outside the circle, write "Time". Inside the circle, place two Xs in the middle of the circle, hanging left a bit.

Situate your event at a specific place (e.g., at Lone Star Mexican restaurant) and time (e.g., 7:30 PM) and write them down. Beside each of the Xs in the middle of the circle, write down two particular senses (from our five senses: taste, smell, hearing, touch, seeing; e.g., crunchy, spicy).

Then, continue your free write, from the standpoint of the place, time, and senses. Call this free write B.

When you are done, ask yourself, "What is the difference in my writing between free write A and free write B?"

Have fun!
